گیتارهای مدرن می توانند آکوستیک، با سیم های فلزی یا نایلونی و یا الکتریک باشند. بیشتر گیتارها ۶ سیم دارند، اما گیتارهای آکوستیک و الکتریک ۱۲ سیمه و همچنین برخی مدل های ۷ و ۸ سیم نیز وجود دارد. حتی یوکللی که یک ساز کوچک چهار سیم است و معمولا به جزایر هاوایی ارتباط پیدا می کند هم در این دسته قرار می گیرد.

گیتارهای الکتریک دارای پیکاپ و قطعات الکترونیکی هستند که ارتعاشات سیم ها را به سیگنال های الکتریکی تبدیل می کنند؛ این سیگنال الکتریکی سپس به امپلی فایر فرستاده می شود. گیتارهای الکتریک می توانند سالید بادی، سِمی هالو یا هالوبادی باشند. گیتارهای الکتریک در بسیاری از استایل های موسیقی مانند راک، بلوز، کانتری، جز، فانک و ... مورد استفاده قرار می گیرند.

گیتارهای آکوستیک به طور طبیعی با ارتعاش سیم ها و رزونانس بدنه ی ساز، صدا تولید می کنند. صفحه صدای گیتار یکی از المان های این ساز است که با نهایت دقت طراحی و تولید می شود و جنس آن معمولا از چوب های اسپروس، سدر یا ماهاگونی (ماهون) می باشد. قسمت پشت و کناره های این نوع گیتار معمولا از چوب ماهاگونی، ماهون ستونی، رزوود یا میپل (افرا) تولید می شود. بعضی از گیتارهای آکوستیک دارای پیکاپ و قطعات الکترونیکی هستند و در صورتی که بخواهید صدای گیتار را از یک امپلی فایر یا سیستم PA بشنوید می توانید از آن استفاده کنید؛ در این حالت ولوم بیشتری خواهید داشت و می توانید با پدال ها به صدای گیتار افکت بدهید.

امپ گیتار نوعی امپلی فایر است که برای بازتولید سیگنال های گیتار الکتریک بهینه شده است. امپ های گیتار دو فرمت اصلی دارند: هِدها و کومبوها. هِدها تنها امپلی فایر هستند و باید آن ها را به یک کابینت اسپیکر مجزا متصل کرد؛ اما کومبوها امپلی فایرهایی هستند که داخل آن ها اسپیکر وجود دارد. امپلی فایرها معمولا به سه دسته تقسیم می شوند: تیوب، سالید استیت و هیبریدی.

پدال های افکت گیتار به شما کمک می کنند تُن ایده آل را بسازید. برای داشتن تُن های راک پر حجم می توانید به صدا دیستورشن بدهید و با استفاده از دیلی ها، ریورب ها، واه و ... جزئیات دیگری را به صدا اضافه کنید. شما می توانید برای هر افکت یک پدال جداگانه تهیه کنید و یا این که از یونیت های مولتی افکت استفاده نمایید که دارای چندین افکت هستند.

بسیاری از افراد اهمیت و نقش حیاتی سیم های گیتار را دست کم می گیرند. سیم ها به گیتار شما کمک می کنند که صدا، حالت اجرایی و حتی حس بهتری داشته باشد. سیم های قدیمی می توانند مشکلات اینتونیشن و تیونینگ ایجاد کنند، در حالی که سیم های نو جان تازه ای به صدا و قدرت اجرایی گیتار شما می دهند و باعث می شوند بهترین صدا را از گیتار بگیرید. بعضی از سیم های گیتار دارای پوششی برای ممانعت از انباشته شدن روغن و کثیفی ها روی سیم هستند که موجب می شود طول عمر سیم بالاتر برود.

یوکللی یک ساز کوچک چهار سیم است که معمولا به جزایر هاوایی مربوط می شود. بسیاری از یوکللی ها از چوب درخت کوآ ساخته می شوند که تنها در هاوایی پیدا می شوند و دارای ظاهری زیبا و بافتی سه بُعدی هستند. یوکللی ها در چهار سایز عرضه می شوند که از کوچکترین به بزرگترین عبارتند از: سوپرانو، کنسرت، تنور و باریتون
